Welcome to the Mountain Cove Family Web site, the online home of the Grubbs family in Sanford, Florda.
You may wonder why we chose to call our site the "Mountain Cove Family Web site". We wanted to pick a name that was unique, but at the same time had a special meaning to it. In our search we have learned alot about origins of many different surnames. Some surnames are names taking -- or based on -- the first name of the ancestor's father (patronymic), some are names reflecting the occupation or status of the ancestor, others are names that are nicknames describing the ancestor's face, figure, temper, morals, or habits and others, like ours, are names recording localities or places where ancestors originated.
GRUBBS (German). "Hollow pit, mountain cove" (Germanic).
Spelling variations include: Grubb, Grub, Grubbe, Groube, Groub and others.
First found in Berkshire where they were anciently seated as Lords of the Manor.
Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Many settlers were recorded from the mid 17th century in the great migration from Europe. Migrants settled in the eastern seaboard from Newfoundland, to Maine, to Virginia, the Carolinas, and to the islands.
Note: I know when you think of the Florida landscape, you don't think about mountains, however in my searching on line I have found a photographer named James A.
